Best Buy: C5 Corvette ZO6

If you are looking for a Collector Car that you can drive to work, show, race and generally have fun with what would it be? Over time I have learned that it is extremely difficult to find a car that can do all of these things. I have tried over the years and failed miserably a number of times.

The problem is that once you start modifying your daily driver it is likely less dependable and hates sitting in traffic. Fancy paint makes you afraid to park your car. Worst of all, once you have spent lots of money on your ride you become protective of it and it sits.

This is our 2001 ZO6 purchased new on July 4, 2001. It is my absolute favorite Corvette out of the 25 or so I have owned!

Arguably, the biggest problems is finding a really fun car that is reasonably priced, gets good mileage, goes like stink and is a car you are proud to be seen in. Believe me I have been there more than once and the result is multiple cars in the garage. (That’s not a bad thing but is can get expensive!)

The solution, find a low mileage early C5 Corvette. If you are really serious, make it a ZO6. These cars can get close to 30 miles to the gallon if driven conservatively and 26 if you are heavy footed. A ZO6 is rated at 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds. That is fast even by today’s standards. They have a terrific radio and air conditioning. The big draw back is there are only 2 seats but how many times do you really have more than 2 people in your collector car?

I have seen good examples selling in the high teens and low twenties.

I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California and now live in Tennessee. I have been into cars since I was old enough to remember. I don't have a brand loyalty although I do prefer American Muscle especially the 1969/1970 NASCAR Aero Cars. (Check our our www.TalladegaSpoilerRegistry.com page) As long as it has four wheels on it I get excited. Few men are lucky enough to be able to share their passion for cars with the woman they love. Fortunately, my wife Katriana is also a gear head and many of our activities revolve around the cars. We have a small collection that includes at least one car from each of the Big Three. Katrina prefers all original cars while I like to modify them so we have a few of each. When we aren't playing with cars we are out with our miniature donkeys.
