We have new info on these car coming very soon, 10/21/2011.
Here is the only photo I have been able to find on a 1969 Mercury Cougar GT 500. I have also been provided with the following link which will also provided the following information. Click Here to visit the site.
1968 Cougar 500
The 1968 Cougar 500 appears to have been a regional dealer promotion. They have Cougar script on the rear quarters followed by block 500 letters then a Cyclone style checkered flag. These cars all had Polar White exterior color with either red or black interior. They are based on the standard Cougar. Most are R-code CJ cars: VIN 8F91R5xxxxx. It has been reported that there were 54 of the Cougar 500s built, but not all were 428’s. It has also been reported that one small block Cougar 500 is in Tennessee: VIN 8F91C5xxxxx. They were sold in the Atlanta (DSO 21) region and the Washington, D.C. (DSO 17) region.
These were all built between (approximately) May to July of 1968. We believe some were built in late April. There is presently one documented as White with Black Vinyl top and originally sold in the Washington, D.C. area, and the small block Cougar 500 in Tennessee. We have information on another 428 CJ that we will be providing information on very soon.
Any readers who live in or around the Tennessee or Georgia and Washington D.C. areasor anyone who has a NASCAR program or newspaper from the 1968 season of races after May 15, 1968 may want to search for Lincoln-Mercury Dealer advertisements. These may shed some light on who, what and why in regard to these special Cougars. These same kinds of documents have been extremely helpful in sorting out information on the 1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500.
